What’s Blooming in 2025
Gardening is a hobby enjoyed by billions all over the world, letting us cultivate joy, connection, and, yes, a bit of dirt under our nails. But what’s encouraging our green thumbs to shop for all of our gear?
To help you understand the trends, we surveyed 513 gardening gurus to unearth the latest trends. The majority of those surveyed (about 60%) were between the ages of 30 and 60 years old, with about 69% female respondents. The household income for roughly 62% of our survey respondents was between $10,000 and $99,999.

what's getting in the way?
Biggest Barriers to the Garden Gate
Even the most beautiful gardens have weeds to pull. So, what’s stopping people from getting their hands dirty?

While 52% of respondents actively garden at home (indoor or outdoor), over 23% don’t garden at all. Why? The reasons range from lack of time to lack of interest…or maybe they just haven’t met the right plant yet.
To encourage new gardeners to shop with you, consider offering beginner-friendly kits, easy-to-follow guides, or workshops that make gardening feel less intimidating and more rewarding.

Where Gardeners Dig for Inspiration
When it comes to finding gardening tips, tricks, and ideas, gardeners are turning to a variety of sources.

54% rely on friends and family (because who doesn’t trust Aunt Linda’s advice on tomatoes?). 38% head to YouTube for how-to videos, while 30% scroll Pinterest for dreamy garden inspo. A whopping 37% trust the experts, turning to local garden center staff for advice.
To plant your brand in the right places, consider partnering with influencers, creating shareable content, and building relationships with local garden centers. Interestingly, 21% of customers say they’re “very likely” to purchase from a brand they’ve seen recommended or featured online, while 40% were “somewhat” likely to do so, and only 3% were “very unlikely.”

What Makes a Plant the Pick of the Patch
When faced with a row of plants, what makes gardeners choose the one?

52% say it’s all about visual quality: if it looks good, it’s going in the cart. 17% rely on the information on the label or packaging (more on this below), while 13% trust their gut or feel an emotional connection (yes, plant love is real). Only 9% take advice from staff or fellow shoppers.
To stand out, focus on clear, attractive labeling and make sure your plants look their very best on the shelf.

What’s on the Tag Matters
Plant tags and labels aren’t just decoration. They’re a gardener’s cheat sheet. What do gardeners want to see?

Unsurprisingly, 68% find basic care instructions (water, light, and soil needs) helpful, while 53% look for indoor vs. outdoor suitability. 50% want bloom and harvest timing clearly displayed, while 38% are interested in ideal companion plants or placement. 22% value environmental or sustainability certifications.
Adding QR codes or links for more care tips (24%) can also help tech-savvy gardeners feel supported long after they’ve left the store.

Do Gardeners Read the Care Instructions?
The answer is a resounding…sometimes.

50% always read and keep the instructions, while 37% read them once, then toss them. 9% only look them up if the plant starts struggling.
The takeaway? Make your care instructions easy to read, memorable, and accessible online for when that fiddle leaf fig starts looking sad.

How Important is the Grower’s Story?
Does the story behind the plant matter? For some, it’s a dealbreaker.

20% say it’s very important, as they want to support growers they align with. 38% say it’s somewhat important; in other words, they’ll consider it if it’s on the label. 26% say it’s not very important and 14% don’t care at all—they’re just here for the plants.
If your brand has a compelling story, share it! Highlight your sustainability efforts, local roots, or unique growing practices to connect with values-driven gardeners.
